CS Alfred Mutua’s Innovative Tourism Initiative: “One Tree per Tourist”

Tourism Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua announced a new initiative on Friday, proposing that every tourist visiting the country should plant a tree.

During a tree planting event in Taita Taveta, Mutua emphasized that this plan is part of the government’s goal to plant 15 billion trees.

Named “One Tree per Tourist,” the initiative, according to Mutua, is a crucial move in the country’s fight against climate change.

Mutua disclosed that the decision was made during a cabinet meeting at the State House, where ministers discussed strategies for promoting a green economy.

The program will be implemented in cooperation with various tourism agencies, hotels, and other relevant stakeholders.

CS Mutua emphasized the importance of biodiversity and ecosystem preservation for the tourism sector.

Under this initiative, tourists arriving in the country will be provided with a tree to plant in designated areas, contributing to the government’s tree-planting objectives.

Mutua reiterated that tree planting is an ongoing and essential activity for preserving the country’s ecosystem.

His remarks followed a directive from the President, William Ruto, instructing all ministries to engage in tree-planting activities for the next six months.

Speaking during a tree planting event in Murang’a County, Ruto stated that starting from Monday, May 13, every ministry will plant trees daily.

He emphasized that this effort is not confined to a one-time event but will continue daily for the next six months, with each ministry taking charge of tree planting on designated days.
