CS Addresses Outrage: Government Maize and Beans Boil for Excessive 4-Hour Duration
On Wednesday, June 14, Rebecca Miano, Cabinet Secretary for the East African Community, refuted rumors that the government distributed maize and beans that required more than three hours to cook.
Miano disclosed to the Senate that the government has never received negative feedback regarding the distribution of maize and beans throughout the country as part of President William Ruto’s relief program.
Miano responded to the claims made by Senator Fatuma Dullo of Isiolo, who bemoaned that some residents were having trouble cooking beans, which she claimed took longer than usual.
Dullo, therefore, pleaded with Miano to give money instead of food to the affected individuals.
“I recall a time when opinions were gathered on the ground, and cash transfers were given to individuals in lieu of food. Why can’t you use cash transfer instead of providing food that doesn’t even reach the intended recipients, especially beans that take three to four hours to cook?” Dhullo questioned.
In her response, Miano stated that the government was considering alternative dry foods to distribute as part of the relief effort.

“We have not yet received a complaint regarding the beans and the maize, which takes longer. Miano replied, “We will continue to work on cash transfers so that vulnerable communities and individuals can continue to sample what else is easier to cook on the market and conduct a survey on alternative relief foods or dry foods that may contain the same protein.”
President Ruto championed the food relief program, which benefited all 47 counties. Other stakeholders contributed to the initiative’s fund-raising efforts.
Miano told the Senate that the government, in collaboration with other partners including the National Drought Management Authority, distributes rice in 50-kilogram bags, beans, maize, vegetable oil, and other fortified food bases.
Other humanitarian organizations provided non-food items, such as iron sheets, wood, nails, mattresses, blankets, jikos, tents, soaps, and sanitary towels.
According to Miano, as part of Kenya Kwanza’s initiative to alleviate poverty, other communities received water supplies and livestock protection.
In November 2022, the Vice President of Kenya, Rigathi Gachagua, urged Kenyans to contribute to a nationwide food drive.
“We urge Kenyans to donate food so that it can be distributed to those in need. Numerous Kenyans are suffering, so we are issuing this call to aid them. No Kenyan should die of hunger while others have an abundance of food, the DP pleaded.
Over 4,1 million Kenyans across 23 counties in Arid and Semi-arid Lands (ASAL) felt the heat of an extended drought at that time.
The government even created a platform for Kenyans to make contributions.
