Clergy Calls for 2022 Election Audit

The Inter-Religious Council of Kenya has called for the formation of an independent, multisectoral task force to audit the 2022 election process.

IRCK stated before the National Dialogue Committee at the Bomas of Kenya that the audit would identify electoral process flaws and weaknesses.

However, the council did not call for an audit of the 2022 presidential results as Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya Alliance has been demanding.

“The goals of the audit shall include how to cut the cost of conducting elections significantly,” IRCK vice chair F.S Abdallah said.

By Supreme Court recommendations, he stated that the audit should examine the role of election technology.

Abdallah stated that audits should also be designed to eliminate corruption and regulate campaign expenditures.

“Operations of the electoral body should be made transparent and independent and processes predictable,” he said.

IRCK was founded in 2005 as a coalition of the three largest faith communities (Christians, Hindus, and Muslims).

The council aims to strengthen interreligious dialogue and collaboration.

The Political Parties Liaison Committee requested an audit of the 2022 presidential election results while appearing before the committee.

PPLC informed the committee that the audit would eradicate any doubts regarding the IEBC’s announced results.

“It is not too late. We can still do it and put the doubts and arguments to rest,” said PPLC national chair Evans Misati.

Raila Odinga, leader of the opposition party Azimio, has also demanded an audit of the presidential election results, insisting that his victory was fraudulent.

Auditing was one of Raila’s demands when he called for nationwide anti-government demonstrations.

IRCK also requested that the Supreme Court’s deadline for ruling on a presidential election petition be extended.

The council proposed amending Article 140 of the Constitution to provide the Supreme Court with 21 days to rule on a petition, up from the current 14 days.

IRCK also advocated for the establishment of the Office of Opposition Leader and the Office of Prime Cabinet Secretary.

Abdallah stated that the runner-up in a presidential election should be nominated to Parliament by his/her party.

“The Leader of Official Opposition to be the Leader of Minority side in Parliament,” he said.

It stated that the responsibilities and powers of the Office of the Prime Cabinet Secretary would be determined by Congress.
