Clarity Emerges on Prime Minister’s Deal with Ruto in Bipartisan Talks: Azimio Perspective

Saturday, May 6, Azimio la Umoja addressed rumors. That the coalition had reached an agreement with the Kenya Kwanza administration. Regarding the formation of the office of Official Leader of Opposition and Prime Minister.

On Friday, May 5, news outlets reported that a National Assembly committee had agreed to establish the two offices. To ensure that the government is subject to checks and balances.

According to National Assembly Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi, speaking to GossipA2Z. The position of prime minister was not on the table.

“No, no! No arrangement exists to recreate the position of the prime minister. I am unaware of any such agreements,” he stated.

The Minority Leader of the National Assembly stated that. Any agreement reached with President William Ruto or his administration will be made public.

You are also aware that I do not belong to the bipartisan team. “I am not a member of the committee that allegedly discussed the issues,” Wandayi replied.

“We have nothing to hide, however. We will inform our members of any agreements reached in the Bipartisan Committee or the National Assembly, stated Wandayi.

In the interim, Wandayi urged Kenyans to pay attention to the bipartisan committee’s deliberations, which are likely to conclude within a month.

“Our team will report to us whenever they have something concrete,” he added in response to a question about the two parties’ agreement to appoint secretaries outside of Parliament.

Reportedly, the bipartisan parliamentary committee decided to nominate joint secretaries outside of Parliament to advise it on its mandate and terms of engagements.

Kenya Kwanza selected attorney Muthomi Thiankolu, while Azimio chose attorney Paul Mwangi.

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s demands included the appointment of secretaries outside of the legislature.

As soon as the bipartisan discussions began, Raila demanded dialogues similar to the 2008 National Accord, which established the Grand Coalition of Powers. Raila was named prime minister, while Mwai Kibaki retained the presidency.

Kenya Kwanza, however, rejected a similar dialogue – mediated at the time by former United Nations secretary-general Kofi Annan – because Raila desired a power-sharing formula.

Raila clarified, however, that he was not interested in pursuing the position of prime minister or opposition leader.

Before Kenya Kwanza and Azimio were embroiled in the bipartisan talks drama, the debate on establishing an official Office of the Opposition leader began after the August 2022 elections.

In Parliament, the opposition is represented by its minority leaders, who are in charge of driving the legislative agenda and voicing dissenting opinions.
