It claimed to be a civilian “airship” used for meteorological research that had “deviated far from its planned course” after being blown off course due to its limited steering capability.

Beijing also expressed regret for deviating from its original course.

While defense officials stated that the balloon’s current flight path takes it over “several sensitive” military sites, US President Joe Biden is believed to have decided against shooting it out of the sky due to the risk of falling debris.

It was first spotted over Billings, Montana, on Wednesday, which is very close to Malmstrom Air Force Base, one of the US’s three nuclear missile silo fields.

The balloon is still in US airspace, but officials have refused to say where it is.

It had previously flown over the Aleutian Islands, off the coast of Alaska, and across Canada.
