Chebukati’s Brother Spills Secrets: “He got sick right after elections”(video)

A brother of former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman, Wafula Chebukati, has spoken about his death ahead of his burial. The burial is scheduled for Saturday, March 8, at his Sabata farm in Kitale.

    Chebukati’s Health Struggles

According to his brother, Chebukati fell ill shortly after the controversial 2022 general elections. He initially complained of an eye problem and sought medical treatment locally.

Doctors diagnosed him with a tumor, which later recurred. Due to the severity of his condition, he was flown to Germany for advanced treatment and surgery. He stayed in Germany for five months, undergoing medical procedures and recovery. In December 2024, he returned to Kenya after showing signs of improvement.

Unfortunately, his health deteriorated once again when the tumor reappeared. His condition worsened, and he was admitted to a city hospital’s intensive care unit (ICU). Despite receiving specialized medical care, he succumbed to the illness.

    Chebukati’s Integrity Defended

Amid claims that Chebukati was bribed to declare William Ruto as President in the 2022 elections, his brother strongly defended his integrity. He described Chebukati as an honest man who always upheld the constitution and remained firm in his decisions.

The 2022 elections were among the most contentious in Kenya’s history, with divided opinions on the outcome. Chebukati, as the IEBC chairman, was at the center of the electoral process. Despite pressure from various political factions, he stood by his duty to deliver a fair and transparent election. His brother emphasized that Chebukati never accepted any bribes and that his actions were guided by the law and his commitment to democracy.

    Chebukati’s Legacy in Kenya’s Elections

Wafula Chebukati played a key role in shaping Kenya’s electoral system. He was instrumental in overseeing three elections, including the repeat 2017 presidential poll after the Supreme Court annulled the first round. His leadership during these elections was both praised and criticized, but he remained steadfast in ensuring the process was conducted according to the law.

During his tenure, Chebukati implemented reforms aimed at strengthening the electoral commission. His efforts to enhance transparency, accountability, and credibility in Kenya’s elections made him a significant figure in the country’s political history.

Beyond his official duties, Chebukati was also a respected legal expert and advocate. His career in law spanned several decades, and he contributed to legal frameworks that influenced governance and elections in Kenya. Many colleagues and politicians have described him as a man of principle and dedication.

    Kenya Mourns Chebukati’s Passing

As Kenya prepares to lay him to rest, many leaders and citizens have paid tribute to Chebukati’s contributions to the nation’s democracy. Political figures from both sides of the divide have acknowledged his role in electoral processes and governance.

His funeral is expected to be attended by family, friends, government officials, and the political elite. His passing marks the end of an era in Kenya’s electoral history, but his legacy remains in the structures he helped shape and the principles he upheld.
