Central Turkana MP Joseph Namuar Apologizes for Supporting Controversial Finance Bill 2024

Central Turkana MP Joseph Namuar expressed regret on Thursday for supporting the controversial Finance Bill 2024.

In a press conference, the remorseful MP admitted his error and sought forgiveness from his constituents.

Namuar praised President William Ruto for refusing to sign the bill into law, despite its passage in parliament.

The MP stated that President Ruto’s decision to withdraw the bill demonstrated his commitment to addressing the demands of Kenyans.

โ€œWe MPs who voted YES to the Finance Bill ask for forgiveness if we made a mistake,โ€ the lawmaker said.

โ€œJust as the president called for dialogue, we, as his supporters, ask for your forgiveness,โ€ he added. Namuar expressed sympathy for Kenyans affected by nationwide protests while admitting the decision.

Namuar’s apology came shortly after President Ruto announced the bill’s withdrawal following widespread public dissatisfaction with the proposed tax measures.

Addressing the press on Wednesday, Ruto revealed that public outrage had resulted in loss of lives, property damage, and the desecration of constitutional institutions.

“Despite these concessions, it became clear that the public still demanded further compromises,” Ruto said.

During his speech, the president also thanked the MPs who supported the bill, noting that it had undergone public participation before its passage.

“I appreciate all the National Assembly members who voted affirmatively for the amended Finance Bill 2024, incorporating views from the public participation process,” the President stated.
