Bus-Truck Crash Kills 12 University Students, Injures 21
Twelve students from a university lost their lives, and 21 others were hurt when a bus and a truck crashed in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Officials confirmed the incident on Friday.ย ย
State Governor Tarcisio Freitas expressed his sorrow on social media, saying, “We wake up to the sad news of this tragedy that took 12 young lives in a terrible accident.”
According to Sao Pauloโs civil defense authorities, the crash happened late Thursday. The injured were taken to a hospital, and most of them were later discharged. However, one person suffered a serious head injury, while three others remained in the hospital but were in stable condition.
Governor Freitas shared that the students were traveling home after attending classes at the private University of Franca (UNIFRAN) when the accident happened. He expressed deep sadness, saying the young students had their dreams taken away too soon.

The government released a statement saying that the truck driver had been arrested. He was hospitalized but is facing charges for leaving the accident scene, negligent homicide, and negligent bodily harm.
To honor the victims, Governor Freitas declared a three-day mourning period across the state. The University of Franca also announced that classes would be suspended on Friday and that they would observe three days of mourning.ย ย
“It is with deep sadness that we receive the heartbreaking news of our students losing their lives in such a tragic accident,” the university said in a statement.
This accident brings back memories of a tragic bus crash in December 2024, when 41 people died in Minas Gerais. That was the deadliest accident on Brazilโs federal highways in nearly two decades.
