Bus Overturns in Kericho County: 19 Passengers Injured

On Monday, July 3, a bus carrying at least nineteen passengers overturned in the Siwot area of Kericho County.

Police Commander Geoffrey Mayek confirmed the accident and stated that three of the injured were in critical condition due to head injuries.

The accident occurred around 10 a.m. on Monday when the majority of travelers were transporting agricultural goods to various regional markets.

The victims were immediately rescued and transferred to various hospitals in Kericho County, where they are receiving treatment, according to local sources.

“They were treated at the Kaplong and Tenwek hospitals. “The accident is still under investigation, but it is believed that the bus was speeding when it struck a pothole,” a source said.

Officers of the traffic police arrived promptly at the accident scene and began processing the evidence, which included the overturned bus.

The source also disclosed that the wreckage was subsequently transported to a local police station, where it will undergo additional examination by other agencies, including insurance specialists.

This was the second traffic accident to occur in Kericho County in the past four days. On Friday, June 30, a trailer traveling on the Kericho – Nakuru road lost control and collided with multiple vehicles, killing over 50 individuals and injuring over 60 others.

Political leaders described the Londiani incident as a national tragedy.

President William Ruto expressed concern over the road safety situation in the country, noting that over 3,000 people die annually in accidents.

Ruto stated that there were over 13,000 road accidents in the country in 2022, resulting in several fatalities and injuries.

Ruto told bodaboda drivers in Nairobi on Monday, June 26 that the government had taken measures to improve road safety, including increasing the number of traffic police officers and enacting new laws to punish reckless driving.

Nonetheless, he noted that more must be done to address the Kenyan road accident problem.
