A father in Bomet County took his own life after fatally harming three of his children and a household on Saturday.

Before the unfortunate event, the family members lived under the same roof, sharing meals and engaging in conversation.

In the aftermath of their untimely and tragic demise, the innocent children, whose lives were abruptly ended at a young age, find a momentary coexistence with their assailant in a lasting facility. Their lifeless forms rest adjacent to each other within the refrigerated confines of the mortuary at Longisa County Referral Hospital.

Simini, also known as Robert Kilel, took his own life in Kipkoy village within Singorwet ward, Bomet Central constituency, shortly after committing the act.

On Friday night, a man attacked the children with a machete in Kipkebe village near Silibwet trading center before fleeing the scene.

On Sunday, Bashir Ali, the Deputy Police Commander of Bomet Central Sub County, along with Geoffrey Omwenga, the Sub County Director of Criminal Investigations, verified the demise of the individual being pursued by the police.

“The suspect committed suicide at his parent’s home (Kipkoy village), a few kilometers from the scene of the killings. Two blood-stained pangas were recovered from the scene where the body was discovered,” Mr Bashir said.

The body of the suspect, exhibiting injuries to the hands and neck, has been transported to the mortuary at Longisa County Referral Hospital for preservation. This is the same facility where the bodies of the four children he killed were brought on Friday.

The individuals targeted in the assault were identified by the police as Lewis Kipngeno, aged 14, Lulu Cheruto, aged two, Abigael Cherono, aged eight, and their 16-year-old domestic helper, Sharon Chepkoech.

“We have opened an inquiry into the two incidents. We are appealing to members of the public who have information to volunteer it to the police,” Mr Bashir said.

On Friday night, Kilel attacked the children, using a razor-sharp machete to brutally end their lives. This disturbing incident seemed to be a deliberate act of murder, and Kilel went into hiding after an alarm was raised.

The oldest son managed to escape the assault by concealing himself behind a curtain within the primary residence. Subsequently, he discreetly left the premises while the perpetrator combed through the bedroom in search of him. He then sounded the alarm, drawing nearby residents to quickly converge on the family’s residence.

The high school student quickly brought his injured younger brother to the nearby Chelymo Hospital, and subsequently, he was transferred to Tenwek Hospital for specialized medical care.

However, the Form Two student from Nyambaria Boys’ Secondary School in Nyamira County passed away upon reaching Tenwek Hospital due to the injuries.

The alleged perpetrator of the homicide reportedly visited his wife, Naomi Chepkoech’s store at Silibwet Trading Centre before carrying out the crime. He unsuccessfully tried to persuade her to shut down the shop and accompany him home.

“He attempted to convince his wife that he was unwell and required attention at home, but Ms Chepkoech declined to close the shop since it was busy market day” Mr Bashir revealed.

The individual went back to their residence and brutally murdered their children. It seems that the plea for help was obscured by the heavy rainfall in the vicinity during that period.

On Saturday, the main house displayed signs of a struggle, with a blood-soaked kitchen floor, firewood, gas cylinder, mattresses, blankets, bed sheets, shoes, and utensils. The evidence of the altercation extended beyond the interior of the house.

“By the grace of God, the wife did not close the shop and accompany the man home as we would probably be talking of a far much bigger crime”, Ms. Ann Korir, a resident said.

On Saturday morning, the mother of the children, Ms. Chepkoech, experienced a shock and collapsed. The preceding night, she had stayed at the residence of a pastor in a neighboring village.

As of Sunday, she remained incapable of communicating with neighbors and the press.

Mr. Gilbert Kibet, a family member of the victims, mentioned that the accused had been absent from home for three days before carrying out the atrocious act.

There is a belief that the man employed a wire to choke one of the children, while the remaining ones sustained severe injuries to their necks and heads.

The individual in question is reportedly a businessperson engaged in the sale of potatoes. Described as someone who tended to be reserved, they are believed to have been a constant source of tension within their family’s historical residence.

“Very few people used to visit his homestead as he has not been friendly. He often beat up his mother at Kipkoy village before he relocated with his family to Kipkebe village,” Ms Ann Mutai, a resident said.

According to Mr. Barno Kimoru, a religious leader, there were no signs of any disagreement between the couple before the assault.

“The family requires all the support they can get from the community. Unfortunately, innocent children were murdered by their father, a man who should have protected them,” Mr Kimoru said.

There has been a noticeable increase in instances of family-related homicides in the area in recent times, primarily attributed to disputes within households.
