Body of Missing 24-Year-Old Found Floating in Kangemi Dam, Nairobi Amid Protests

Detectives are looking into the case of a 24-year-old man whose body was found in a dam in Kangemi, Nairobi.

Simon Owino had been missing since July 26, and his disappearance was reported by his father. Owino was a resident of the area.

Residents discovered the body on July 30 in the Kangemi dam. Divers retrieved the body from the water, which was subsequently identified by Owino’s father at the scene, according to police reports.

The local community expressed their frustration with the police’s slow response by protesting and blocking traffic on Waiyaki Way. They demanded a police vehicle to transport the body to the mortuary and called for an investigation into Owinoโ€™s death.

A police vehicle was eventually dispatched to move the body, and anti-riot police were called in to clear the area and restore traffic flow.

The investigation into the cause of death is ongoing, with no clear cause identified yet.

There are suspicions among locals that Owino might have been targeted due to recent anti-government protests.

The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights reported an increase in reported cases of abductions or disappearances from 59 to 66, and arrests rising from 682 to 1,376.

Police continue their efforts to track down individuals involved in the protests.

Further protests are planned for August 8 as demonstrators continue to push for their demands to be met.

This comes as efforts increase to drop charges against those arrested during the protests.

President William Ruto has urged criminal justice agencies to focus on clearing those wrongfully accused and to redirect their efforts towards serious criminal elements who exploited peaceful demonstrations for harmful purposes.
