Billionaire Real Estate Mogul Francis Mburu Mungai Dies in Karen Home

Prominent businessman and real estate tycoon Francis Mburu Mungai has passed away.

Mburu was found dead at his home in Karen, Nairobi, on Thursday, February 20. His body was taken to Lee Funeral Home for an autopsy to determine the cause of death and for burial preparations.

What Led to Francis Mburu’s Death?

A family friend revealed that the billionaire had been dealing with a mild illness in recent weeks, which might have contributed to his passing.

Francis Mburuโ€™s Wealth and Business Ventures

Mburu built his fortune through real estate, making him one of Kenyaโ€™s wealthiest individuals. While he acknowledged his wealth in a circulating video, he emphasized that he preferred to keep a low profile.

The businessman owned multiple properties across Nairobi and Kilifi counties and was linked to several major land deals in Kenya.

Francis Mburu and the Ruaraka Land Controversy

In 2018, Mburu was at the center of the Ruaraka land dispute, involving a controversial KSh 1.5 billion transaction.

On April 30, 2018, he appeared before the Senateโ€™s County Public Accounts and Investments Committee, where he expressed frustration over the case.

He later filed a lawsuit against the government, seeking KSh 36 billion in compensation for the disputed 39.5-acre Ruaraka land. In his petition, he claimed the landโ€™s market value was KSh 25 billion and demanded an extra KSh 13.6 billion for unpaid rent and accrued interest.

Additionally, he stated that Ruaraka High School and Drive-In Primary School had not paid rent for 34 years, leading to arrears of KSh 5.9 billion.
