Biden to Address Military’s Downed Aerial Objects in Extensive Remarks

Biden will explain how the administration is formulating future rules for other objects.

WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden plans to make his most extensive public remarks to date — as early as Thursday — regarding the unidentified objects that the U.S. military has been shooting down, according to three people with knowledge of the situation.

Biden will explain how he has tasked his administration with establishing parameters for how to handle future sightings of aerial balloons and other objects.

Biden’s exact timing for his remarks has not been determined. Thursday, the president is scheduled to undergo a physical exam that could last several hours.

With federal investigators analyzing the wreckage and numerous unanswered questions, Biden has been circumspect.

White House officials have discussed in private whether he should make a statement regarding the military’s shooting down of a Chinese spy balloon and three other unidentified objects.

Biden is increasingly under pressure to speak out. In the absence of information, conspiracy theories have proliferated, prompting White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre to declare at a daily briefing that the objects that have been downed are not extraterrestrial spacecraft.

This week, she stated, “It was important for us to say that from here because we’ve been hearing a lot about it.”

Legislators who have received private briefings on the aerial objects have expressed a desire to hear directly from Vice President Biden on whether the United States is under threat.

Dennis DeConcini, a Democrat from Arizona who served in the Senate alongside Joe Biden, stated, “In today’s world, you can’t simply put off this sort of thing. If he had said, “I’ll share everything I can as soon as I can,” it would have reassured people that he was on top of the situation.

Biden is expected to discuss how he wants the administration to develop protocols for determining whether to shoot down unidentified flying objects or to let them pass if they are harmless and pose no threat to civilian aircraft.

John Bolton, the national security adviser for the Trump administration, stated in an interview that when Biden speaks, “he must tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth.”
