Baby Junior Sagini’s Attacker Sentenced: 40 Years for Horrific Crime

On Monday, July 24, the primary suspect in the Baby Junior Sagini case was sentenced to forty years in prison for gouging out the child’s eyes.

The senior resident magistrate of the Kisii Law Courts, Christine Ogweno, also sentenced the baby’s aunt and grandmother to 10 and 5 years in prison, respectively.

The primary suspect is the cousin of the three-year-old child whose eyeballs were gouged out during a heinous assault in Ikuruma Village, Kisii County, in December 2022.

“His eyes and eyesight were destroyed by his cousin, Alex Maina Ochogo, the first defendant,” the magistrate stated.

The court on July 7 found the three guilty of gouging out Baby Sagini’s eyes.

Due to a dearth of evidence, the suspects were initially charged with attempted murder, but the charges were dropped on February 2 and changed to serious bodily injury.

The Sagini case shook the nation and prompted demands for the suspects to be apprehended.

Six hours before the assault, Baby Sagini was reportedly abducted.

Early in December, Sagini went missing and was later discovered on his uncle’s maize farm in Marani, Kisii County.

The heinous deed shocked the nation, resulting in widespread outrage.

The Children Act section 18 regarding torture and deprivation of liberty states, “No child shall be subjected to torture, cruel treatment or punishment, unlawful arrest, or deprivation of liberty.”

It is suspected that the case arose from a land dispute between members of his family, pitting them against one another.
