Babu Owino Emerges as Front-Runner to Succeed Raila Odinga in Luo Nyanza Leadership

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino is considered the top choice among politicians to assume leadership in the Luo Nyanza region, potentially succeeding ODM leader Raila Odinga.

This information originates from the Consortium of Researchers on Governance (CoRG AFRICA LIMITED), which carried out a survey regarding public policy and governance in the Nyanza region.

When questioned about the potential successor to Mr. Odinga in the event of his retirement from local politics, 51.8 percent of those surveyed indicated that the Embakasi East MP would assume the role.

Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga secured the second position with 11.6 percent, while ODM National Chairman John Mbadi followed closely with 10.3 percent.

Opiyo Wandayi, the Minority Leader in the National Assembly and Ugunja MP, garnered 9.8 percent, closely trailed by Raymond Omollo, the Principal Secretary of Home Affairs, with 5.2 percent. Meanwhile, 11.3 percent of those surveyed remained undecided.

In announcing the results, Charles Mc’Olonde, the CEO of CoRG, stated that a significant majority (41.6%) think that if Mr. Odinga secures the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship, he should maintain his role in local politics as their leader.

In the Kisii Nyanza region, Simba Arati, the Member of Parliament for the Kisii Government, garnered 67.4 percent of the votes, making him the favored choice for leadership. Sylvanus Osoro, the MP for Mugirango South, received 10.8 percent of the votes, while Anthony Kibagendi, the MP for Kitutu Chache North, secured 6.5 percent. Additionally, 15.3 percent of the voters remain undecided.

In terms of residents’ awareness regarding the fulfillment of promises by governors in the Nyanza region, Governor Wanga scored 68.3, while the Migori Governor followed closely with 61.1, and Governor Arati ranked third with 60.9 percent.

Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka emerged as the top-performing senator in terms of oversight duties within the region, scoring 65.1 percent. Following closely behind was Okong’o Omogeni of Nyamira with 59.8 percent, and Moses Kajwang of Homa Bay secured the third spot with a rating of 57.5 percent.

Regarding project implementation and representation by female county representatives, Fatuma Mohamed from Migori County scored 73.2 percent, making her the top performer. Dorice Donya, the Women’s Representative for Kisii County, followed closely with 70.8 percent. Ruth Odinga of Kisumu County secured the third position with a rating of 66.7 percent.
