Azimio Warns Of Another Govt Blunder Ahead Of KCSE Release

On Saturday, Opiyo Wandayi, the Minority Leader in the National Assembly, raised concerns about the potential inaccuracy of the upcoming Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exam results scheduled for release in the following weeks.

During the press briefing, Wandayi highlighted that the KCSE exam outcomes might face inaccuracies similar to the issues seen in the KCPE results, where there were concerns about students receiving incorrect grades.

Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi (left) and politician Jeremiah Kioni Friday, February 10, 2023

โ€œUnless this issue is addressed, we should expect the worst when it comes to KCSE, am not being an alarmist because I am a very responsible Kenyan but I can tell you,โ€ Wandayi remarked.

โ€œI am afraid that if we do not handle the issues surrounding the bungling of the last KCPE, we should be prepared for a similar or even worse thing.”

Wandayi who took a swipe at the Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu and the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) led by Professor Julius Nyabundi called on KNEC to swiftly address the issues that led to the mismanagement of the KCPE exam results.

The Ugunja Member of Parliament further warned that failure to rectify the errors could land students and even the exam body into more problems.

In his speech, the MP also raised worries over the alleged existence of cartels within the Ministry of Education and KNEC, further questioning the criteria used in awarding the tender to the company contracted to print the examination papers.

“These cartels must be stopped because if they are not stopped, the future of our education will be thrown in jeopardy,” Wandayi noted.

Wandayi’s sentiment comes against the backdrop of CS Machogu’s sentiments defending the credibility of the KCPE exams.

While giving his presentation on Thursday before the Education Committee in Parliament, Machogu attributed the errors in KCPE exams to a company that was contracted to manage the QR code used for conveying the results.

Despite admitting errors, Machogu dismissed Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga’s claims that KNEC awarded a tender to a local company to print the 2023 national exams.

โ€œAs a CS, I have learned lessons because you can see as a ministry, everything was right. Somebody we can call an outsider was given the contract but did not conform and do to the required standard,” Machogu denoted.
