Azimio Sets Preconditions for Ruto Talks

Azimio la Umoja One Kenya has maintained that discussions with the administration of President William Ruto will only occur if they prioritize lowering the cost of living.

Senator of Kitui Enoch Wambua told GossipA2 on Thursday that proposals for talks between the government and opposition are welcome, but they cannot be a repeat of the failed bipartisan talks.

“No matter what happens, individuals will have to converse, even if it’s just to say we disagree completely. Wambua stated that if there is going to be a conversation between the two parties, then the primary issue will be the cost of living.

The senator attributed the failure of the bipartisan discussions to the Kenya Kwanza team’s unwillingness to address crucial issues, such as the high cost of living.

He criticized the government for implementing the contentious Finance Act 2023, which will further burden Mwananchi despite public participation concerns.

“The behavior exhibited by the Kenya Kwanza team and appointing authority was a sham. They were checking off sections to demonstrate their support,” said Wambua.

Tuesday, the co-chairman of a bipartisan committee, George Murugara, urged the Azimio team to consider resuming negotiations.

Since the conversations broke down more than two months ago, the Kenya Kwanza team has expressed willingness to return to the table.

Muragara stated that they are prepared to make the reconstitution of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) a top priority.

“The issue of IEBC reconstitution remains a top priority for us, and it’s one of the issues for which we are willing to engage the Azimio team to find a solution,” he said.

Wambua asserted, however, that Azimio is past the bipartisan talks and that Murugara’s team’s only remaining option is to seek an audience with Azimio principals.

“Our team is past that point and has withdrawn. “That structure collapsed long ago,” said Wambua.

Otiende Amollo, the co-chair of a bipartisan committee, stated that the Kenya Kwanza regime has recognized the escalation of the protests and is therefore requesting a return for negotiations.

“The bipartisan discussions were a means of defusing tensions and taking us in circles. Amollo stated, “When we walked away from the negotiations and they observed that subsequent protest waves are stronger than the first, they asked us to return.”

“The team and I have no independent authority to resume the talks until we are authorized to do so by our parliamentary group and our leaders, which has not occurred,” he added.

Azimio asserts unequivocally that the welfare of the people will take precedence over any political negotiations amid the ongoing political conflict between the government and the opposition.
