Azimio Plans May 2 Anti-Government Protests
Tuesday, May 2, 2023, will mark the resumption of anti-government demonstrations, according to the Azimio la Umoja coalition.
Wycliffe Oparanya, chairman of Azimio’s executive council, said in a statement released on Monday that the resumption was precipitated by the Kenya Kwanza coalition’s refusal to commit to holding constructive bipartisan talks.
Oparanya added that Kenya Kwanza has demonstrated no desire to address their demands, which include addressing the high cost of living.
Kenya Kwanza, he asserted, has instead resorted to “propaganda that the costs have decreased when the facts across Kenya indicate otherwise.”

“It is therefore a mockery of the intended dialogue to have him at the table for Kenya Kwanza negotiations.”
In addition, Kenya Kwanza has shown no commitment to reducing the price of essentials such as unga, fuel, electricity, and school fees, according to the statement.
Additionally, he asserted that Kenya Kwanza has repeatedly attempted to recruit members of the Azimio la Umoja, in violation of the nation’s multiparty democracy.
He was referring to the addition of Adan Keynan, a member of the Edlas Parliament, to the Kenya Kwanza delegation, which they claim belongs to Azimio.
“Legally, the honorable Adan Keynan remains a representative on the Azimio ticket,” read a portion of the statement.
According to Oparanya, Azimio remains committed to an extra-parliamentary dialogue that is “honest, transparent, meaningful, and bipartisan in conception and execution.”
Oparanya says the protests will stay in Nairobi.
After President William Ruto invited the coalition’s leader Raila Odinga to bipartisan talks and addressed their grievances, Azimio called off their biweekly demonstrations on April 2.
