Australia Issues Travel Advisory on Kenya Over Terrorism and Violent Crimes

On Friday, April 5, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Australia issued a travel advisory for Australian citizens intending to travel to Kenya.

The Australian government issued a warning, expressing apprehension about an increase in terrorist activities, and advised travelers to Kenya to exercise extreme caution.

Australians were also warned about the high incidence of violent crimes in Nairobi city and other densely populated areas of Kenya.

โ€œWe continue to advise exercising a high degree of caution overall due to the threat of terrorism and violent crime,โ€ the statement read in part.

โ€œTerrorists continue to maintain a strong interest in attacking foreigners in Nairobi and other major population centers in Kenya.โ€

As per the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs, large-scale acts of terrorism and other significant crimes could happen suddenly and without much advance notice.

The advisory also indicated that there has been a historical increase in terrorist activities and elevated threat alerts during religious and festive holidays.

Australians were additionally cautioned to follow the advice of local authorities in Kenya, with tourists encouraged to stay away from regions known for protests and political assemblies.

“Violent crime occurs, including carjackings, kidnapping, and home invasions. Don’t walk around after dark. If you live in Kenya, invest in strong personal security measures,” the notice read in part.

People heading to Kenya were cautioned about scams by the Australian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which stated that criminals frequently employ counterfeit police, hotel, or government credentials to swindle money from tourists.

“Kenya can experience natural disasters and severe weather. Know the warning signs and safety measures for earthquakes, floods, and tsunamis.”

“Be wary of anyone asking for money or information, even if they seem official,” the advisory further read.
