Professor Lukoye Atwoli, the son of Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) Francis Atwoli, was elected as an international member of the National Academy of Medicine (NAM), headquartered in Washington, D.C., United States of America, on Monday.

This is one of the highest honors in health and medicine, as it recognizes those who have made substantial contributions to the field.

According to a statement by Aga Khan University, Atwoli, dean of the institution’s Medical College, was selected for his advocacy and contributions to global mental healthcare policy, education, and epidemiology.

Among other accomplishments, Lukoye was selected for leading two innovative medical institutions as dean and co-chairing the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s Board on Global Health.

Atwoli credited his comrades at the Aga Khan University and the professionals with whom they have collaborated for the university’s international renown.

โ€œIt is an incredible honor for me to be elected to the US National Academy of Medicine. This election is in recognition of the work we do here in Africa and globally, hopefully impacting our populations by meeting them at their point of need,” he stated.

โ€œAs a member of the Academy I hope to support the institution with my knowledge and experience, but perhaps more importantly to also benefit from the knowledge and experience of other esteemed colleagues at the Academy.”

“I must acknowledge all the colleagues I have worked with and continue to work with here at AKU, and elsewhere in Africa and globally, whose support and collaboration have enabled me to attain this noble recognition. As we say here on the continent, it truly does take a village!”

During the Academy’s annual meeting, 100 new members were selected, including Lukoye. According to NAM President Victor Dzau, the new members’ contributions to the field of medicine are unrivaled, and their expertise is crucial to assisting NAM in addressing global health challenges.

Early in January, Lukoye was elected as an international member of the American Psychiatric Association (APA) for his support of mental health research. This new position is a result of his election.

In addition to his appointments, Lukoye is a member of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) World Mental Health Surveys Consortium, the foremost global collaborative project in the field of psychiatry.

Professor Lukoye Atwoli speaks after being elected as an international member of the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) on October 9, 2023.
