Alex Murdaugh Trial Sparks Reopening of Other Investigations
Following the filing of murder charges against Alex Murdaugh, police are reinvestigating the death of the family’s housekeeper and conducting new inquiries into the death of his eldest son’s former classmate.
The prosecution of a prominent American attorney for the murders of his wife and son has prompted the reopening of investigations into other deaths.
Alex Murdaugh, age 54, is accused of murdering his wife Margaret, age 52, and son Paul, age 22, on their South Carolina estate.
According to prosecutors, the attorney committed the murders after being caught stealing from the family business.
The verdict of the jury is expected soon.
Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal is a Netflix documentary series about the Murdaugh family. In it, residents of the family’s home county, Hampton County, question the family’s historical influence on local law enforcement.
After Murdaugh was charged with murder, police reopened their investigation into the death of the family’s housekeeper.
Additionally, new inquiries are being conducted into the 2015 death of an ex-classmate of Murdaugh’s eldest son.
Who exactly is Alex Murdaugh?
Murdaugh’s history is rooted among South Carolina’s wealthy and affluent.
Before he was disbarred, Murdaugh was a prominent and wealthy personal injury attorney in a powerful legal dynasty established by his ancestors in the Low Country region of South Carolina.
Now, however, the dynasty and he will be forever associated with the horrifying events of the evening of June 7, 2021.
Prosecutors say Murdaugh shot his wife five times and his son twice.
Prosecutors assert that Murdaugh shot his wife five times with an automatic rifle on the family’s hunting property.
His son was shot twice in the head and chest with a different weapon, a shotgun.
The prosecution asserts that Murdaugh altered the firearms used to simulate an ambush.
Murdaugh was the one who dialed 911, sobbing as he reported that his wife and child had been shot severely.
Afterward, he told police he had gone to see his mother and returned to find his wife and son dead by the kennels on the property.
The boating disaster
When officers first arrived on the scene, they discovered Murdaugh in distress. Upon their arrival, he quickly explained the murders, suggesting that they were a response to a February 2019 boating tragedy.
Paul, then 19 years old, had capsized the family boat while three times the legal limit for alcohol consumption.
Several people, including Mallory Beach, 19, who was killed, were thrown overboard.
Murdaugh may have intended to use the boating incident as part of his legal defense; however, it was utilized by the prosecution.
Ms. Beach’s family is suing Murdaugh as the owner of the boat involved in the death of their daughter.
Murdaugh defrauded the law firm, according to the chief financial officer.
The chief financial officer of his law firm testified at Murdaugh’s murder trial that he defrauded the firm and placed the money in his wife’s bank account to shield it from the lawsuit filed by the dead girl’s family.
She told the court that on the day of the double shooting, she confronted him about a missing $792,000 (ยฃ655,000).
It lends credence to the prosecutor’s claim that Murdaugh was driven to murder out of fear that his financial crimes were about to be exposed, and that his wife and son were murdered to garner sympathy and thwart investigations.
The Snapchat recording raises questions about the alibi
Paul Murdaugh’s Snapchat video has also been played in court to strengthen the prosecution’s case.
It depicts a brown labrador in the kennels where the shooting occurred.
Five minutes before his death, Paul filmed the video, and witnesses have identified one of the voices on the tape as that of Murdaugh. Prosecutors note that this contradicts his initial alibi, according to which he had not seen his wife or son for 90 minutes before discovering their bodies.
In court, while addressing the inconsistency, Murdaugh admitted he had lied. He explained that his twenty-year opioid addiction made him paranoid and distrustful of law enforcement.
Investigations of additional deaths
As the murder trial continues, new investigations into other deaths within Murdaugh’s orbit commence.
Gloria Satterfield served as their housekeeper until her passing in 2018. It was originally believed that a fall on the front steps of the Murdaugh residence was the cause. Murdaugh’s subsequent financial dealings have lent credence to the possibility of an alternate explanation.
Following Ms. Satterfield’s passing, he obtained an insurance payout for her sons of over $4 million (ยฃ3.3 million) but kept the money for himself.
He agreed to a $4.3 million (ยฃ3.6 million) settlement only after being pursued in court.
New investigation initiated
The murder charges against Murdaugh coincided with a new investigation into the death of 19-year-old Stephen Smith, who was discovered dead on a road approximately 10 miles from Murdaugh’s residence. At the time, his head injury was considered to have been the result of a hit-and-run.
The adolescent was a classmate of Buster, the Murdaughs’ eldest son. Law enforcement officials have not publicly acknowledged any connection to the Murdaugh family despite ongoing investigations.
99 other costs
In addition to bringing Mr. Murdaugh to trial for murder, the South Carolina Attorney General has charged him with 99 other financial crimes dating back several years. He is accused of defrauding clients of more than $8 million (ยฃ6.6 million).
Three months after the deaths of his wife and son, the jury at the Colleton County Courthouse in Walterboro, South Carolina, has also heard about a bizarre “suicide attempt” by Murdaugh.
He told the paramedics that he was changing a tire on the side of the road when someone stopped to assist him and then shot him in the head.
He later admitted to investigators that he fabricated the incident with a drug dealer to obtain a $10 million (ยฃ8.3 million) life insurance payout for his son Buster. The aforementioned dealer, Curtis Edward Smith, was subsequently charged with several crimes, including assisting suicide, aggravated assault, and battery.
Murdaugh faces between 30 years and life in prison if convicted of double murder. South Carolina’s prosecutors chose not to pursue the death penalty.
