Alego Usonga MP Samuel Atandi Appointed as Budget Committee Chair, Replaces Ndindi Nyoro

Alego Usonga MP Samuel Atandi has officially been appointed as the Chairperson of the Budget and Appropriations Committee in the National Assembly. His appointment follows President William Rutoโ€™s pact with ODM Party leader Raila Odinga under the broad-based government framework.

Nyandarua Senator John Methu had previously indicated that committee leadership positions in Parliament had already been determined by party leadership, with members expected to follow directives rather than engage in contested elections.

โ€œFor all the elections that have happened at the Senate, the elections have not been contested because these are issues that have been agreed upon. The decision of who chairs what is not really a decision of the members,โ€ Methu stated in a recent interview.

Ndindi Nyoro Removed from Budget Committee Leadership

On March 5, 2025, Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro was officially removed as Chairperson of the Budget and Appropriations Committee following a motion moved by South Mugirango MP Sylvanus Osoro, the National Assembly Majority Whip.

Osoroโ€™s motion restructured the National Assembly committees, effectively stripping Nyoro of his role. However, the Kiharu MP remains a member of the Budget Committee, giving him the option to contest for either the vice-chair position or continue serving as a member.

    Party Directives on Committee Appointments

The ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party leadership has exerted tight control over committee appointments, warning members against engaging with perceived rebels or opposition figures.

โ€œThe leader of the majority (Kimani Ichungโ€™wah) wrote on our platform, โ€˜Those who are engaging rebels and the opposition, we shall dewhip you from those particular committees,โ€™โ€ Methu revealed.

Additionally, the Defence Committee will now be chaired by Belgut MP Nelson Koech, reflecting a broader restructuring of parliamentary committees.

Atandiโ€™s appointment marks a significant shift in parliamentary leadership, aligning with ongoing political realignments within the government.
