Owino vs. DCI: Clash Over Court Order
The United States Embassy issued a security advisory to its citizens on Wednesday, July 27, before the Azimio la Umoja vigils scheduled for later that day.
Despite assurances from the opposition that the event will be peaceful, the embassy issued a warning in a statement that the planned nationwide demonstrations could turn violent.
According to the advisory, there may be traffic disruptions. As a result, the embassy advised American citizens to avoid the areas where the vigils will be conducted, monitor local media for updates, avoid large crowds, and maintain a low profile.
“Actions to take include being aware of your environment, evaluating your security plans, and carrying valid identification.
“Have evacuation plans that do not rely on the US government,” read a portion of the statement.
The Azimio Coalition, led by former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, will conduct vigils across the nation in memory of Kenyans who lost their lives in anti-government demonstrations held in the preceding weeks.

Initially, the opposition planned to conduct another demonstration today; however, it canceled the protests and urged its supporters to instead hold vigils.
Azimio indicated that the events would take place at a variety of locations, including bus terminals, social halls, county assemblies, and the county’s administrative center.
“After lighting the candles and laying the wreaths, groups organize, chant the national anthem, and pray for justice on behalf of the deceased and injured.
Azimio instructed its supporters, “Here in Nairobi, leaders from the various pillars of society will gather at the designated location already communicated to say prayers, lay wreaths, light candles, and launch a fund to assist victims and their families.”
The National Police Service (NPS) under Inspector General Japhet Koome has not yet stated the Wednesday vigils.
