    Maina Njenga Condemns Arrest Of Suspected Mungiki Members, Insists They're Innocent

    Former Mungiki Chief, Maina Njenga, Granted Bail

    Former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga was released by a court in Nairobi.

    Njenga was released on Tuesday, July 25, after posting a Ksh100,000 cash surety by a judge’s ruling. At the Makadara Law Courts. Additionally, he was permitted to post a Ksh200,000 surety.

    The release occurred after five days under police observation, four of which his family and attorneys reported him missing.

    On Monday, July 24, while appearing in court, Njenga was accused of weapon possession.

    According to the prosecution, fourteen machetes, twenty-four Maasai blades, forty-six rungus, and three plows were recovered from his residences.

    The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) reported that the state believed the firearms would be used to disrupt public order.

    Njenga and two accomplices, Peter Njoroge Kamunya and Felix Ratu Lakishe, were apprehended.

    “On July 20, 2023, in the Kiserian area of Kajiado County, John Maina Njenga, Peter Njoroge Kamunya, and Felix Ratu Lakishe jointly organized an unlawful assembly and procession scheduled to take place in Nairobi City County and other parts of the Republic of Kenya,” according to court documents.

    Monday, a magistrate in Nairobi refused to release Njenga because his life was in peril.

    On Thursday, July 20, it was reported by his counsel that he was arrested by fifty police officers at his Kiserian residence.

    His attorney at the time, Ndegwa Njiru, noted that the former leader of the outlawed Mungiki group had been apprehended by police who did not disclose the reasons or allegations he was facing. He disappeared for four days.
    His home was reportedly invaded by police at approximately 8:00 p.m.
