Transport Cabinet Secretary Unveils PSV Relocation Plan to Railway Station

Tuesday, June 27th, Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen. Disclosed joint plans with the Nairobi County government to relocate Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) using the train station as a bus terminal.

Murkomen stated in a statement that the move would pave the way for the development of Nairobi Railway City.

The CS announced after witnessing Kenya Railways and WS Atkins International (a multinational engineering company based in the United Kingdom) sign a commercial contract.

The agreement would facilitate the creation of preliminary architectural plans. For the Nairobi Central Station and, subsequently, the Nairobi Railway City.

Through this agreement, the government aims to establish Nairobi as a leading global city and commercial hub.

“To pave the way for the construction of the City, we will be working with the Nairobi City County and various stakeholders on a relocation plan for Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) currently using the railway station as a bus terminus to ensure the relocation process is as humane and as orderly as possible,” he stated.

As a result, Murkomen predicted that the growth of the city would produce 10,000 job openings.

He urged the UK company’s leadership to include local architects and contractors in the upcoming January 2024 construction project.

“The development of the City will generate 10,000 direct and indirect jobs, revitalize the area around the Nairobi Central Station, create a multimodal transport system, and position Nairobi as a leading global city and commercial hub.”

“I urged the leadership of M/S Atkins to include local architects and contractors as well as young graduates in the profession in the design and development of the City as a means of leveraging their skills, expanding their experience, and putting money in their pockets by the government’s Bottom Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA),” he said.

The ambitious plan of the Kenya Kwanza administration aims to contribute to the decongestion of Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD).
It will include over 10,000 affordable housing units, environmentally-friendly green spaces. And a modern matatu terminal linked to the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system.
