Shakahola Cult Update: Leader Paul Mackenzie Receives Additional 30 Days in Prison

The controversial preacher Paul Mackenzie will be held in custody for thirty days during the investigation into the Shakahola massacre, which has so far resulted in the deaths of over one hundred thirty-three people.

The decision was made by Senior Principal Magistrate Yusuf Shikanda, who stated that releasing the suspects would put not only the suspects’ safety but also the investigation at risk.

On May 3, the suspect will become detained for thirty days to facilitate the police investigation into the deaths of individuals who are believed to have been members of a starvation cult.

The prosecution, which was led by Jami Yamina. Demanded that the suspects be detained for at least 90 days, expressed dissatisfaction with the timeline that was given by the court.

On Wednesday, the suspects, including the preacher and his wife. Were brought before the law courts in Shanzu along with 17 other potential perpetrators.

According to an affidavit that was signed by the Investigating Officer, Inspector Raphael Wanjohi. Detectives are requesting the detention of Mackenzie and 17 other individuals. Because the investigation is still ongoing and there are potential leads that have not yet been investigated.

Prosecution asserts in court documents that newly discovered information demonstrates compelling reasons for the respondents to remain in detention while the investigation is still ongoing.

The prosecution believes that additional investigation is required. Because it is not possible to determine the identities of the second through seventeenth suspects in the case.

The prosecution also asserts that until all of the exhumations are finished. They will not be able to determine the identities of some of the victims. Who are thought to be relatives of some of the defendants.

According to the documents filed with the court, “DNA material can only be obtained from it for analysis with that of the respondents after the last body has been exhumed.” This statement was made.

While the investigations into the cult deaths continue. The suspects will be detained at various police stations located throughout the city of Kilifi.
