‘Ghost’ Nyandiwa Hospital Scandal Takes New Twist as Locals Reveal New Details

The controversy over Nyandiwa Level 4 Hospital in Homa Bay County has taken a new turn after locals claimed the facility has never opened its doors, despite Social Health Authority (SHA) CEO Mercy Mwangangi insisting it has been running since the 1970s.

Residents living near the hospital told reporters they were shocked to learn the facility has been receiving government funding even though it has remained closed for years.

Many revealed that they have always been forced to travel to Rachuonyo to seek medical care.

‘’That is a surprise and breaking news to me. It is very concerning that the hospital is receiving funds, yet we have never seen the hospital working. This is a waste project,’’ one resident lamented.

‘’What I can tell the government is, open the hospital, so that it can now start operating, so that we can also start working here, it can be very beneficial to us who live near it,’’ another added.

Locals said they have waited for more than ten years for the hospital to officially begin operations, but nothing has changed.

The uproar intensified after SHA published a list of hospitals that received funds in August 2025, showing Nyandiwa Level 4 had been allocated Ksh20 million.

Soon after, photos and videos circulated online confirming the hospital is still inactive, sparking heated debate over where the money is going.

SHA boss Mercy Mwangangi quickly dismissed the allegations, saying the claims were false.

“The Social Health Authority (SHA) has noted with concern a misleading article published on August 22, 2025, alleging that SHA disbursed Ksh20 million to a ghost facility. These claims are false, misleading, and undermine basic principles of responsible journalism, such as accuracy, fairness, and balance,” the statement read in part.

However, even as Mwangangi defended SHA, NTV reported that Health CS Aden Duale gave a contradictory account, suggesting the hospital’s inclusion may have been an error.

The Rural and Urban Private Hospitals Association, which has been pushing for payments from the defunct NHIF, also weighed in, saying the Nyandiwa saga reflects broader problems and failures within SHA.
