State House Bishop Reveals Intrigues Behind Ruto’s Church Project

State House Chaplain Benard Njagi has supported President William Rutoโ€™s plan to build a modern, multi-million-shilling church at State House.

Speaking to journalists on Thursday, July 10, at State House Nairobi, Njagi said that a budget of between Ksh20 million and Ksh30 million would be enough for the project. He explained that he and other worshippers had requested the new church after realizing that the current place of worship was in poor condition.

According to Njagi, the new church would serve more than 300 families living within the State House premises, giving them a proper and safe space to worship.

In his proposal to the President, Njagi asked for support to build not only a modern Anglican church but also a Catholic chapel and a mosque, to serve the spiritual needs of everyone in the State House community.

“As Christians, we approached the President and asked for his help to build a proper church to replace the one made from iron sheets,” said Njagi.

He added, “This place gets very cold, and children who come here to worship risk falling sick with pneumonia. Thatโ€™s why we turned to the President, and he agreed to help us.”

Njagi also noted that the poor state of the current church makes it difficult to host events such as worship conferences and other key gatherings. The existing Anglican church at State House was set up in 2020 with support from former First Lady Margaret Kenyatta, who discovered the structure during her regular morning jogs in 2019.

President Ruto recently promised to upgrade the old church but strongly denied claims that the new project would cost Ksh1.2 billion. While speaking at the ACK Diocese of Embu on July 6, Ruto said he was unaware of where that figure came from and blamed the media for spreading false information.

He emphasized that it would be unreasonable for a church designed to hold 300 people to cost more than an 11-storey building, which is valued at Ksh350 million.

โ€œThe Bishop showed me the building weโ€™re putting up. Itโ€™s eleven floors high and will cost Ksh350 million. So how can a church for just 300 people cost a billion shillings?โ€ Ruto asked.
