Nyong’o suspends Azimio demonstrations in Kisumu so that Raila supporters can participate in demonstrations in Nairobi.

Anyang Nyongo, the governor of Kisumu, has announced the suspension of the county’s bi-weekly anti-government Azimio demonstrations.
In a statement to the news media on Wednesday, Governor Nyongo explained that the suspension was the result of discussions with the county and national leadership of the Azimio la Umoja coalition.

Governor Nyongo claimed in his statement that Kisumu residents who have protested the high cost of living and the contested General Election have delivered their petitions to the government on “these very serious matters.”

In addition, he asserts that the indefinite suspension of demonstrations in Kisumu will allow Raila supporters to join the ongoing unrest in Nairobi.

“Effective immediately, all public demonstrations in Kisumu County have been suspended indefinitely so that we can join the protests in Nairobi,” declared Governor Nyongo.

He claimed that despite the suspension, Kisumu residents remain committed to Azimio La Umoja’s objectives and its campaign for a better Kenya.

Three people have died in Kisumu as a result of the anti-government demonstrations that began a week ago, including two who were shot to death and one who succumbed to injuries inflicted by a mob.

Several incidents of theft and vandalism have also been reported during the protests.

Raila Odinga, leader of Azimio La Umoja, stated on Tuesday that the twice-weekly anti-government demonstrations would continue.

The former prime minister wants the government to address a variety of issues, such as the rising cost of living and access to IEBC servers, ostensibly to determine who won the most recent general election.

Monday’s second round of protests in Nairobi did not go without incident, particularly in Kibra, where Raila and his allies set up camp.
