ODM Pushes Junet Mohamed for Interior CS as Kindiki Eyes Deputy President Role
Nyaribari Masaba MP Daniel Manduku disclosed that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has endorsed National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed as a potential candidate for Interior Cabinet Secretary, should former Tharaka Nithi Senator Kithure Kindiki assume the role of Deputy President.
During an October 25 panel on K24 with Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa, Manduku confirmed ODMโs support for Mohamed, though he emphasized that President William Ruto will make the ultimate decision.
Mandukuโs response followed a moderatorโs question about whether ODM had proposed a candidate amid rumors of the party’s efforts to secure additional cabinet representation for aligning with government policies and initiatives.
“Yes, Junet Mohamed is our choice. We have proposed his name, but the final call belongs to the president,” Manduku remarked.
Manduku suggested that Kindiki may have already submitted a resignation letter to President Ruto following the National Assemblyโs endorsement of him as the next Deputy President.

“The role is open, and resigning is personal. He may have notified the president, but it doesnโt require public disclosure,” Manduku speculated.
On October 18, the National Assembly supported Rutoโs nomination of Kindiki for Deputy President after the impeachment of Rigathi Gachagua, with 236 MPs casting votes in favor.
“Honourable members, the count for Professor Kithure Kindiki to fill the Deputy President vacancy is as follows: abstentions, zero; no votes, zero; and yes votes, 236. Itโs an overwhelming approval,” Speaker Wetangula announced.
Junet Mohamed currently serves as the National Assembly Minority Leader and represents Suna East as its MP.
This shift occurs as ODM continues to benefit from supporting Rutoโs inclusive government, which has led to opposition members receiving cabinet appointments.
If Mohamed is appointed Interior CS, he will join four other ODM leaders in Rutoโs Cabinet, namely Hassan Joho (Mining), Opiyo Wandayi (Energy), John Mbadi (Treasury), and Wycliffe Oparanya (Cooperatives and MSMEs Development).
