Murang’a Woman Representative Betty Maina has made a series of allegations against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua as the impeachment vote approaches in the National Assembly on Tuesday, October 8.

Facing the real possibility of impeachment, Gachagua will find out his fate on Tuesday when Members of Parliament vote on whether to advance the impeachment motion against him to a full trial.

In the lead-up to this crucial day, discussions around his potential impeachment are intensifying, with the Murang’a representative making her position known through some serious allegations.

On her Facebook account Sunday, Betty Maina strongly asserted that Gachagua deserves impeachment, recounting past incidents where the Deputy President allegedly insulted her and her family.

“We have faced insults, threats, and humiliation,” she stated on Facebook, adding, “On his way to my dowry and the night before, he made unthinkable and venomous comments that devastated me. I cannot forgive the things he has said to me personally or the remarks made by his associates.”

The Murang’a Woman Representative married to Mathira MP Eric Wamumbi, seemed to be reacting to Gachagua’s earlier plea for forgiveness on Sunday, where he expressed remorse to everyone he had wronged.

During a church service on Sunday, Gachagua made an emotional appeal to political leaders, including his boss, President William Ruto, asking them to find it in their hearts to forgive him.

“I want to say to my brother President William Ruto, if I have wronged you in our eagerness to work, please forgive me,” the beleaguered Deputy President implored.

Despite being from the Mount Kenya region, Betty Maina stands as one of Rigathi Gachagua’s most vocal critics. One notable moment came when Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi suggested in September that Gachagua would be impeached ‘in two weeks.’

In response, the Murang’a Woman Representative echoed Sudi’s statement, saying, “If anyone is going home, he should be the first one to take a ticket to leave. Oscar Sudi said two weeks, and we believe that those two weeks should be when he goes home,” she declared amid heavy rainfall.

Gachagua faces a tough battle ahead

Despite assembling a formidable team of 20 elite lawyers, the odds are stacked against the Deputy President. He faces multiple charges, including disrespecting the President and illegally acquiring wealth estimated at KSh 5.2 billion.

Before he softened his position and sought forgiveness, Gachagua categorically denied the allegations against him, asserting that the impeachment motion was driven by political motives. He has also criticized ODM-affiliated leaders, claiming they aim to undermine the Kenya Kwanza administration.
