The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party clarified on Monday that it had not called a meeting with its members of Parliament to discuss impeaching Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Reports suggested the meeting was scheduled for Monday, just one day before Gachagua was expected to present his defense before the National Assembly.

In a statement, the opposition party flagged a fake breaking news poster, which used the logo and design of Nation.

The poster falsely claimed, “Raila summons ODM MPs for Monday strategy meeting on Gachagua impeachment amid public discontent with Ruto’s government.”

“There is no such meeting today. Good day,” read the caption accompanying the fake poster.

This clarification came amid ongoing discussions about the Deputy President’s impeachment, with ODM asserting it had no involvement in the motion.

Speaking on Friday in Migori, ODM deputy party leader Simba Arati emphasized that the impeachment process was solely the mandate of Parliament.

He reiterated that ODM was not in partnership with the Kenya Kwanza government and would respect the decisions made by both houses regarding Gachagua’s impeachment.

“I will continue to ensure that the ODM party discipline is upheld to strengthen the party ahead of the next General Election,” Arati stated.

As Kisii Governor, Arati also noted that the National Assembly would be responsible for assessing, evaluating, and delivering a verdict on the impeachment motion, in line with the country’s laws.

“As a party, we are not demanding Gachagua’s removal, but if Parliament has decided, then let it be,” he said.

“We are not targeting Gachagua as ODM. We have also supported President William Ruto in stabilizing the Kenya Kwanza government. Therefore, it should not be said that ODM is part of the government,” Arati warned.

However, some ODM-affiliated legislators did sign in support of the impeachment proceedings against Gachagua.

On Friday, there was a public participation exercise to gather citizens’ views, which saw violence break out at Bomas in Nairobi after activist Morara Kebaso tried to present his perspective.

Deputy President Gachagua is expected to appear before a special plenary session of the National Assembly on Tuesday, October 8, to present his defense against the charges.
