Senate Dumps Nyamira Governor’s Audit, Demands New Report in 21 Days
On Friday, the County Public Investments and Special Funds Senate Committee abruptly ended its meeting with Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo, demanding a more detailed audit report within 21 days.
Governor Nyaribo appeared before the committee to address issues regarding the management of county funds for the fiscal years 2020/2021, 2021/2022, and 2022/2023 in Nyamira Municipality.
Led by Senator Godfrey Osotsi, the committee raised significant concerns about various development projects in the municipality, as highlighted in the Auditor General’s report.
According to a statement on the official Parliament website dated September 6, the committee concentrated on irregularities related to road construction projects and unverified hotel allowances.
The governor was questioned about delays in completing two public roads: the Public Works Offices – Nyamira Hospital Junction Road and the Borabu Inn-Golan Heights Resort. He assured the committee that work on these roads had resumed and was nearing completion.

Regarding concerns about unverified hotel allowances, Governor Nyaribo explained, “There was an administrative oversight in maintaining proper records. We have since corrected this issue and implemented stricter controls to ensure all expenditures are properly documented.”
However, the committee deemed this explanation inadequate as the supporting documents were not available during the initial audit for verification.
Due to discrepancies in the report concerning the road projects and unverified hotel allowances, Senator Osotsi instructed the governor to submit a detailed report to the Auditor General and mandated a re-audit of the road projects.
He concluded by setting a deadline for the new report, stating, “The auditors must report back to this committee within 21 days with the updated audited report, allowing for a thorough review of the county’s financial management.”
Counties have recently faced increased scrutiny over financial mismanagement, with a proposal to reduce county budgets from Ksh400 billion to Ksh385 billion to address this issue.
Governor Nyaribo, known for his proactive stance on auditing his team, last conducted an audit in May 2023 focusing on irregular promotions. In the same month, 79 Nyamira County employees were suspended following a crackdown on fake certificates.
