Internal Turmoil Hits KUPPET as Teachers Reject Strike Suspension Decision,  Demand Akello Misori Resignation

Just a day after the Kenya Union of Post Primary Teachers (KUPPET) ended a two-week national strike, internal conflicts have surfaced within the union. Some officials have accused the top leadership of betrayal.

On Tuesday, teachers from Central, Western, Rift Valley, and Nyanza regions expressed their concerns during a press conference in Kisumu, alleging that KUPPET Secretary General Akello Misori did not adhere to proper procedures when ending the strike.

These teachers have called for Misori’s immediate resignation, claiming that the decision to end the strike was made against the best interests of the union members.

The teachers insisted that the strike remains ongoing despite Misori’s announcement. They challenged Misori to provide proof that the strike was officially called off.

Joseph Abicha, the KUPPET Kisii Branch Secretary-General, questioned the decision, asking why they would meet to ratify a decision after it was announced.

Abicha further pointed out that the National Governing Council was supposed to be the body to decide on suspending the strike.

Additionally, the teachers criticized Misori for not consulting the National Governing Council before making any agreements with the government.

Sabala Inyeni from Vihiga compared the teachers to electrical switches, suggesting that they cannot simply be turned off and on without proper procedures.

Although the teachers apologized to parents for the inconvenience, they affirmed that the industrial action would continue until their demands were met.

Abicha reassured parents that, despite the ongoing strike, the union cannot make promises about the next steps until all their issues are resolved.

On Monday, Misori announced the suspension of the strike to allow the government time to address the issues promised to KUPPET officials.
