KUPPET Ends Weeklong Teachers’ Strike After Reaching Agreement with TSC

The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has ended its teachers’ strike after a discussion with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

KUPPET’s Secretary General, Akelo Misori, announced the suspension of the strike following a preliminary agreement reached with the TSC.

He instructed union-registered teachers to return to work immediately as negotiations continued to address their concerns.

“In alignment with the court order expected on Thursday, September 5, we are halting the strike and directing all our teachers to resume their duties while we expedite the resolution of these issues with the commission,” Misori stated.

TSC CEO Nancy Macharia, who attended the press conference, noted that both parties had productive negotiations with KUPPET, resulting in the strike’s resolution through alternative dispute mechanisms.

Macharia confirmed that an agreement was reached with KUPPET during the meeting.

“After a day-long discussion, we are pleased to inform the nation that we have reached a mutually agreeable solution, allowing our teachers to return to work immediately,” she announced.

On August 21, 2021, the government committed to funding the second phase of the teachers’ Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), which was set to begin on July 1, 2024.

Macharia also confirmed that all teachers have benefited from the implementation of the CBA’s second phase, and all back pay has been settled.

“The government has successfully implemented all the terms of the 2021-2025 CBA with the teachers’ unions, specifically the second phase that commenced on July 1, 2024,” she stated.

Key resolutions include restoring third-party deductions, reinstating the medical scheme, and promotion of 51,232 teachers. Additionally, the government has allocated more resources for retraining Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers and is committed to resolving any remaining issues.

The strike’s conclusion effectively ends KUPPET’s weeklong industrial action that began on August 26. Earlier today, however, students were sent home due to the ongoing strike and the resulting teacher shortage.
