How Raila’s Kisumu Invitation Landed Me in Jail- Former Nigerian President Obasanjo
Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo recounted how a visit to Kenya led to his imprisonment.
Obasanjo explained that an invitation from former Prime Minister Raila Odinga to visit Kenya resulted in his incarceration upon returning to Nigeria.
During a speech at the unveiling of Raila’s candidacy for the African Union Commission chairmanship at State House, Obasanjo lauded Raila, noting their long acquaintance.
He shared that his relationship with Raila dates back to the 1990s when he visited Kisumu to honor Raila’s father, Jaramogi Oginga.
“Meeting you has been a great privilege; my visit to Kisumu in 1995, which was part of honoring Jaramogi Odinga, was a result of our longstanding relationship,” Obasanjo remarked.
Following his Kenyan visit, Obasanjo faced allegations of plotting a coup, which led to his imprisonment in Nigeria.
“Your invitation to Kisumu in 1995 and my subsequent outspoken remarks upon returning home led to accusations of plotting to overthrow Kenya’s government and a coup in Nigeria, which landed me in jail,” he explained.
Obasanjo, however, viewed his imprisonment as a blessing in disguise that potentially paved the way for his presidency.

“Thus, your invitation to Kenya and my candid comments upon returning ended up with me in prison, but it might have been a necessary step towards my becoming President of Nigeria,” he added.
The former Nigerian President expressed confidence that Raila would significantly impact Africa if elected as African Union Commission chairperson.
Obasanjo believed Raila would advance Africa’s interests, bringing pride, power, peace, and prosperity to the continent.
“He will elevate Africa, making it proud, powerful, peaceful, and prosperous. We need all these aspects, and we are here to support you,” he stated.
He also emphasized that Raila’s election would entail significant responsibility for both him and his supporters.
“If you succeed in this role, we must ensure your success, and we will support you in every way possible, praying that you fulfill your part,” Obasanjo added.
Obasanjo highlighted the strong domestic support Raila is receiving.
“Raila is not just a candidate for Kenya but for the entire East African community,” he pointed out.
He stressed the urgent need for Raila’s leadership at a time when Africa is facing numerous challenges, including conflicts and poverty.
“With ongoing wars in Europe and widespread hunger in Africa, we cannot overcome these issues without uniting as a continent and addressing our internal challenges,” he concluded.
