Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga Refutes Claims of Ksh 100M Factory Demolition for Office Construction, Cites Safety Concerns

Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga refuted claims on Wednesday that she ordered the demolition of a Ksh100 million factory to make way for her office.

In her statement, Governor Wanga labeled the reports as false, explaining that the factory was taken down because it failed to meet essential construction standards.

Wanga explained that the project lacked necessary approvals from key agencies including the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), Kenya Airports Authority (KAA), and Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA).

This was due to the factory’s location approximately 300 meters from the Kabunde Airstrip, which falls within a flight path.

“Manufacturing animal feed in this area was incompatible with the flight path and the risk of bird strikes. The site has been re-zoned under the Physical Planning Act,” Governor Wanga explained.

“The animal feed project has been relocated to the County Aggregation and Industrial Park at Riwa Special Economic Zone.”

The Governor revealed that the unfinished project, which began in 2014, deteriorated over time and became abandoned.

Rejecting the claim that the building cost Ksh100 million, she pointed out that the project was eventually decommissioned during her tenure.

“Unfinished projects from past administrations, like this one, are either repurposed or completed to ensure public funds are used effectively,” she stated.

Governor Wanga also called on the media to report impartially and gather comprehensive information before publishing such stories.

“If we had been consulted, we could have provided this additional information,” she said.

“We are committed to transparent, accountable development in Homa Bay County and dedicated to serving and transforming our community,” she concluded.
