ODM Faces New Turmoil as Position Disputes Spark Fresh Protests

Orange Democratic Party (ODM) officials and members in Isiolo County expressed their frustration on Tuesday, alleging that the party leadership has marginalized them in the distribution of cabinet and top party roles.

They highlighted that despite the North Eastern region being a stronghold for ODM, it was overlooked in the recent cabinet secretary appointments proposed by the party.

The recent nominations included Nominated MP John Mbadi, National Assembly Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi, and former governors Wycliffe Oparanya of Kakamega and Ali Hassan Joho of Mombasa, all chosen to join President William Ruto’s cabinet.

However, none of the four cabinet secretaries nominated by ODM to Rutoโ€™s administration hail from the Upper Eastern Region.

The North Eastern regional party leaders voiced their disappointment, emphasizing that their region was once again excluded as ODM proposed new leadership roles within the party.

Despite their concerns, they welcomed the nomination of Homabay Governor Gladys Wanga as the party chairperson, seeing it as a positive move towards promoting gender inclusion.

The North Eastern representatives urged ODM leader Raila Odinga to ensure that their region is considered in future appointments, both within the party and the government.

“We in Isiolo County are requesting that appointments should not only be concentrated in Nyanza and Coast. We need representation here in Isiolo,” they emphasized.

They also called for representation at the national level to ensure they have a voice in key decision-making processes.

This development comes as ODM leader Raila Odinga faces criticism for what many perceive as his alignment with the government. Several of his allies, including those mentioned by Isiolo’s ODM leaders, have been appointed to serve in President William Ruto’s inclusive government.

Last week, ODM members from the Kisii region also raised concerns about being overlooked for cabinet positions.
