Protesters Reject Royal Family at Commonwealth Day Event

On March 13, a group of angry protesters surrounded Westminster Abbey while shouting anti-monarchy slogans as members of the Royal Family arrived for Commonwealth Day.

The protesters held up yellow placards that read “Not My King” in front of the historic church while waiting for King Charles and other members of the royal family to arrive for a Commonwealth Day service.

This is King Charles’ first Commonwealth Day as monarch.

Anti-monarchy organization Republic announced their intention to organize a protest at the site before the King’s arrival, and they have also stated their ongoing plan to disrupt the coronation celebrations, which they refer to as a “pointless parade.”

Graham Smith, speaking for Republic, said that they are continuing a series of protests against the monarchy leading up to the coronation, which they believe is entirely unnecessary and will cost between ยฃ50-100 million.

Smith added that they are determined to get the message across that it is okay to protest against the royals.

During the protest, several yellow placards were held aloft together to spell out “Not My King.” One protester, a white woman, held a placard that read “racist Royal Family.”

Video footage captured the protesters shouting and blowing whistles as the King and Queen Consort stepped out of their car across the road.

This demonstration follows a similar one organized by Republic in Colchester the previous week, as part of their action in the run-up to the coronation.

During this protest, one man with a megaphone asked the King to “come and talk to your critics” as he and the Queen Consort exited their car upon a visit to the newly-appointed city.

Another high-profile Republic protest occurred in Milton Keynes in February, during which the monarch was heckled as he entered the Church of Christ the Cornerstone for a civic reception.

Overall, the protesters are vocalizing their opposition to the monarchy and the upcoming coronation celebrations, which they believe are unnecessary and a waste of money.

They are also using their demonstrations to encourage others to protest against the royals, as they seek to get their message across and influence public opinion on the matter.
