Martha Karua Quits Azimio, Calls Narc-Kenya’s Alliance with Raila No Longer Tenable
Martha Karua, the head of the NARC-Kenya Party, has declared her departure from the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition.
Her decision follows President William Ruto’s nomination of four senior members from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), the coalition’s leading party, to the cabinet on Wednesday.
Karua announced her exit via an official statement posted on her social media accounts.
In the notice, Karua stated, “Kindly take note that our stay in Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition is not tenable due to the prevailing political developments.”
“As NARC Kenya by way of this letter, we are giving notice to exit the Coalition as stipulated in the exit clause(s) in the Coalition Agreement. This notice is effective from the date of this letter.”
Karua served as the presidential running mate for the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition, which is headed by opposition leader Raila Odinga.
Her letter was sent amid ongoing political instability within the Azimio la Umoja Coalition, which had been critical of its recent engagement with the government.

Recently, key allies of Raila, such as ODM Deputy Party leaders Hassan Ali Joho (Ministry of Mining) and Wycliffe Oparanya (Ministry of Cooperatives), were appointed to prominent cabinet roles.
Additionally, ODM Chairman John Mbadi (Treasury) and National Assembly Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi (Ministry of Energy) also received nominations.
Some leaders have strongly criticized these appointments, arguing that they were not approved in the Orange Democratic Movement or Azimio la Umoja Parliamentary Group Meetings.
On Thursday, July 25, a group of ODM Members of Parliament held a press conference to distance themselves from the decision by certain leaders to collaborate with the Kenya Kwanza administration.
The party leader has remained silent on the issue, neither confirming any discussions with his political rival nor acknowledging the surprising nominations.
The resulting confusion and political tension appear to have provoked Martha Karua, who is known for her dedication to constitutionalism and integrity.
