Tupatane Tuesday: Nationwide Protests Planned in Response to President Ruto’s Reappointment of Ousted Cabinet Secretaries

President William Ruto’s recent nomination of six previously ousted cabinet secretaries has ignited a wave of planned nationwide protests scheduled for next Tuesday.

On Friday, President Ruto re-nominated several former cabinet members to their positions, including Aden Duale for Defence, Prof Kithure Kindiki for Interior, Soipan Tuiya for Environment, Climate Change and Forestry, and Alice Wahome for Lands, Public Works, Housing and Urban Development. Additionally, Rebecca Miano was nominated as the new Attorney-General.

The announcement has fueled a call to action among anti-government protesters mobilizing under the slogan “Tupatane Tuesday” on social media platforms.

These protesters are preparing to “shut down” operations in various towns and crucial areas within Nairobi’s Central Business District.

Social media influencer Francis Gaitho strongly criticized the reappointments, perceiving them as dismissive of the ongoing protests and public outcry.

Dennis Ombachi, a former rugby player turned chef, also expressed his disapproval, particularly regarding the reinstatement of Prof Kithure Kindiki, whom he believes should be held accountable for alleged incidents of police brutality.

Activist Hanifa Honeyfarsafi echoed these concerns, urging continued mobilization of the youth until their demands are addressed.

The protest organizers have detailed plans to disrupt major thoroughfares and strategic locations.

They intend to block Mombasa Road from Nyayo House to Mlolongo and target other key spots like Ole Sereni, the Airtel headquarters, City Cabanas, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, and various expressway exits.

The goal is to create significant disruptions and draw attention to their cause.

In addition to these actions, the protesters have urged Members of Parliament to reject the cabinet nominations.

Should the MPs fail to do so, the protesters have warned of escalating street demonstrations.

In response to the brewing unrest, President Ruto has reiterated his administration’s dedication to addressing the youth’s concerns.

He emphasized a commitment to job creation and upholding integrity in governance as central pillars of his government’s strategy to mitigate the growing dissatisfaction among the populace.

The upcoming protests reflect a significant level of public discontent with the current administration’s decisions and underscore the deepening tensions between the government and its critics.

As the situation unfolds, the effectiveness of the government’s response and the protesters’ actions will likely shape the political landscape in the weeks and months ahead.
