Outrage as Kenyans Dispute Police Claim in Macharia Gaitho’s Arrest: “Incompetence nayo.”

Kenyan critics have questioned the National Police Service’s explanation of journalist Macharia Gaitho’s abduction.

Gaitho was abducted on July 17 by individuals suspected to be police officers near the Karen Police Station.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) claimed in a statement that Gaitho’s arrest was due to a case of mistaken identity.

“The National Police Service would like to clarify to the public that this morning, we arrested journalist Macharia Gaitho in a case of mistaken identity, meant for the arrest of Francis Gaitho who is our subject of investigation,” DCI said.

Kenyans have widely rejected the police’s rationale for Gaitho’s apprehension, which was recorded on video.

Many questioned why the experienced journalist was detained despite promptly seeking refuge at the police station upon noticing unidentified individuals tailing him.

Some Kenyans also questioned why the authorities at Karen Police Station failed to first verify his identity before taking him into custody.

“Whether a journalist or anyone, arresting a senior citizen inside a police station where he had gone to seek refuge in such a manner should be called out, it’s immoral, inhumane, and such act is making the service look crooked.”

“It’s just because all was captured in a video. Otherwise, the guy was meant to be abducted. Nothing erroneous here.”
