Waiguru Targets Gachagua as Kenya Kwanza Rift Widens

Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has highlighted the importance of inclusivity and mentorship in political leadership, subtly critiquing Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

In her speech, she emphasized that leadership roles should not be personalized and underscored the importance of supporting ambitious Kenyans, especially women and youth, in their political and socioeconomic goals.

Waiguru stated, “While we respect the office of the Deputy President, and indeed any other office of leadership, a progressive democracy does not allow us as occupiers of public leadership offices to personalize them to the extent that it becomes taboo for anyone else to nurture and express ambition to occupy them.”

She argued that leadership roles are held in trust for the public rather than being personal property.

Waiguru called on the Deputy President to acknowledge and support the ambitions of others, particularly young people and women, who often face significant challenges in their pursuit of high office.

“Let us recognize the right of all, especially our women and our youth, to aspire to high office. Let us hold their hands in mentorship on political and socioeconomic leadership,” she added.

Her comments come amid growing tensions in the Mt. Kenya region between Deputy President Gachagua and Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro.

Recently, politicians aligned with the Deputy President accused Nyoro and other young politicians of attempting to undermine Gachagua, who is the highest-ranking government official from the region.

Waiguru reiterated that mentorship is essential for developing future leaders, providing them with the necessary guidance and support for success.

“Everyone has a right to dream and pursue their dreams, just as those currently in leadership once did, and their dreams were actualized with the support of millions of youth and women. They too, deserve support, not hostility,” she said.

The escalating rivalry threatens to destabilize the political landscape in Mt. Kenya, with various leaders aligning themselves with either Gachagua or Nyoro.
