His formative years reverberated with the melodies of Benga, Taarab, and Rhumba, genres that would indelibly shape his artistic trajectory.

Early musical beginnings
While Freshley Mwamburi began his singing career in 1980, his breakthrough in Kenya’s music scene occurred during the early 1990s.
Credit for his musical journey is attributed to his grandfather, who was a performer at public events attended by the late President Jomo Kenyatta.
Following his completion of high school, Freshley enlisted in the Air Force, where he served as an artist. In 1983, he secured a contract with the Simba Wanyika band, headed by the late Wilson Peter Kinyonga and his brother George Peter Kinyonga.
By 1987, Freshley had transitioned to Les Wanyika, a band led by the late John Ngereza and Prof Omar.
Formation of his band, Everest Kings
Freshley chose to depart from Les Wanyika in pursuit of greater creative autonomy, establishing his ensemble, Everest Kings.
This decision provided him with the opportunity to refine his distinctive musical style, which garnered widespread appeal.
By blending conventional African beats with modern elements, he quickly rose to prominence within the Kenyan music scene.

In 1991, while performing with his band, Everest Kings, Freshley met Stella at the Garden Hotel in Machakos. Stella, a University of Nairobi student, later departed for Japan to further her education.
Despite Freshley’s consistent support, including financial assistance for Stella’s studies, she eventually moved on and married another man.
The profound emotional resonance of ‘Stella Wangu’ struck a chord with many, cementing its place as one of the most cherished songs in Kenyan music history.
The creation of the song was also facilitated by the enduring support of his close friend Engineer Njau Njoka, whom Freshley even mentions in his music.
Njoka not only supervised the production of the ‘Stella’ remix but also encouraged Mwamburi to return to music.
