Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki, on Thursday, May 16, unveiled a Unique Personal Identification (UPI) number, which will now be utilized in the process of issuing birth and death certificates.

In a legal notification, Kindiki disclosed amendments made to the Births and Deaths Registration Act.

The Births and Deaths Registration (Amendment) Rules, 2024, specify that each individual will have a singular UPI number throughout their lifetime.

According to the legal notice, “The registrar shall assign each distinct entry a unique personal identification number.”

It further stated, “The same unique personal identification number assigned during a person’s birth registration will be utilized as the unique personal identification number during the registration of their death.”

Acknowledging the introduction of the UPI number, Kindiki instructed that the register of births and deaths be maintained by a registrar in areas where registration is compulsory.
