ODM Delays Local Elections in Four Counties

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party has decided to delay elections in four counties due to the current flooding.

On Friday, Emily Awiti, the chair of the party’s National Election Coordination Committee (NECC), announced that this decision comes in response to counties requesting a review of their program.

The affected counties include Busia, Siaya, Kajiado, and Wajir.

“Large sections of the respective counties are experiencing floods and related challenges occasioned by ongoing heavy rains,” she said.

“Having reviewed the ground situation and assessed the requests, the NECC wishes to announce that the elections scheduled for 27th, 29th, and 30th April 2024ย are temporarily postponed. These will resume as soon as the situation has improved.”

The first phase of ODM grassroots electionsย was setย to begin on Saturday.

According to an earlier schedule shared by the party, elections will be held in Kwale, Busia, and Siaya counties on April 27 to select their leaders. Meanwhile, residents of Kajiado, Migori, and Wajir counties will choose their leaders on April 29.

On April 30, the party will complete the initial stage of the process by holding elections in the counties of Kisii, Vihiga, and Murang’a.

A recent meeting of the National Governing Council (NGC), chaired by party leader Raila Odinga, took place ahead of the local elections.

The National General Council approved the decision of the National Executive Committee, which involved restructuring the election coordination committee before the local elections.

NEC has approved the creation of a three-person National Elections Coordinating Committee to manage local elections.

On January 10, the party’s Central Management Committee established the roles of two coordinators, one male and one female, to manage the election in the counties.

However, NEC increased the number of coordinators to three to establish a quorum and maintain an odd number for decision-making when voting is required.
