Govt Unveils New School Classification, Phasing Out National Schools
On Thursday, April 25, Belio Kipsang, the Education Principal Secretary, revealed that the government would be eliminating the national categorization of schools.
At the first annual symposium on competency-based assessment, Belio stated that this is one method to put the new curriculum into practice.
Under the outgoing 8-4-4 educational system, secondary schools are classified into national, extra-county, county, and sub-county categories.
“We will soon convene a stakeholders engagement on the pathways and pathway placement in Senior School,” Kipsang spoke during the symposium.
“Secondary schools will soon be categorised according to the pathways they will offer.”
Senior schools will now refer to what were previously known as secondary schools, where students from Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) will attend next.

Under the new classification, senior schools will be defined based on the variety of subjects they offer.
This includes; Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Centres, Humanities and Arts Schools, and Creative Arts and Sports Schools.
The categorization will be mostly based on the academic institution’s resources and infrastructural capabilities.
Given that most national schools possess ample resources such as libraries, laboratories, and social amenities, they are poised to provide a combination of the three streams.
Conversely, sub-county schools, constrained by limited resources, are likely to offer only one combination of subjects.
Students will now undergo a three-year duration in senior school before advancing to university or college, based on their interests and academic achievements.
