Civil Servants Strike After Govt Slashes Their Salaries Over Misconduct

On Monday, March 25, Nyandarua County workers did not show up for work following a decision by the county government to reduce their salaries.

According to government employees, their pay was reduced due to what the county referred to as improper behavior.

Addressing the assembly of workers at the Olkalau sports ground, their spokespeople contended that the reduction was unjust, citing their exposure to hazardous work conditions.

โ€œAs Nyandarua county workers, we are gathered here today with one complaint. The workers have been deducted money from their usual salaries,โ€ the representative explained.

The employees additionally alleged that the county administration was making threats toward individuals who voiced grievances about the challenges encountered in the workplace.

As per the county representative, letters were given to the workers outlining various infractions that led to deductions from their salaries.

โ€œWe have only issued an explanation letter, with a simple question. You were supposed to work these number of hours, but you worked less,โ€ he explained.

โ€œExplain why you want to be paid for the hours you did not work.โ€

As a result, regular county operations have come to a halt because of conflicts between county officials and employees.

Workers claim that their working conditions are substandard and detrimental to health. When they attempt to voice their grievances, they are met with threats.

Regarding connected issues, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has intensified efforts to catch civil servants possessing counterfeit certificates. Those apprehended in this crackdown are being directed to reimburse the salaries and benefits they received for the duration of their employment.

In February, Anthony Muchiri, the Chairperson of the Public Service, disclosed that individuals employed in the civil service who possessed counterfeit certificates were opting to resign from their roles to sidestep potential legal disputes.

“Such persons shall not be entitled to any form of benefit, including pension, unpaid allowances, and accrued leave,” Muchiri noted.
