Revealed: Inside Raila, Ruto Campaign Calendar For AU Commission Chair Seat

Ex-Prime Minister Raila Odinga has launched an intensive campaign across African nations, aiming to secure a decisive victory in his bid for the Chairperson position of the African Union Commission.

President William Ruto has enlisted various government ministries to conduct campaigns on behalf of Mr. Odinga.

This follows the resolution of obstacles by the AU permanent representatives on Friday, paving the way for Mr. Odinga’s candidacy for the 2025 AU vote in Addis Ababa.

The ex-prime minister has developed an extensive campaign across Africa, beginning by traveling to South Sudan for a meeting with President Salva Kiir in Juba.

In April, Mr. Odinga revisits Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania, to convene with President Samia Suluhu Hassan, aiming to strengthen the East Africa voting alliance.

Mr. Odinga has previously convened with President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda alongside President Ruto, and recently conducted another gathering in Kigali, Rwanda, with President Paul Kagame, accompanied by two of his trusted associates.

He’s planned meetings in the Horn of Africa for April, including stops in Djibouti and Ethiopia, as indicated on his calendar.

In May, Mr. Odinga plans to travel south, intending to visit Zimbabwe, Malawi, Angola, Zambia, and Botswana.

The plans for the visit to South Africa are uncertain as the nation, led by Cyril Ramaphosa, approaches the final stages of its election campaigns scheduled for May 29th. Both Ramaphosa of the ANC and Julius Malema, the candidate from the EFF, have their sights set on the presidency.

Supporters of Mr. Odinga suggest that he is closely monitoring the upcoming May elections in South Africa and plans to rendezvous with the newly elected President in Cape Town in June.

President Ruto has designated April for official visits to African nations, with plans to journey to Ghana on April 2nd and 3rd.

He will convene discussions with President Nana Akufo-Addo on the sidelines concerning Kenya’s bid for the AU Commission.

President Ruto is scheduled to undertake a State visit to Egypt on April 15th and 16th, at the invitation of President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.

In late April, President Emmerson Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe is set to welcome President Ruto for a two-day State visit in Harare, which is anticipated to support Kenya’s bid for the AU Commission while strengthening bilateral ties.
