Haiti & Kenya’s Secret Summit in US: Classified Meeting Revealed Despite Court Ban

On Wednesday, February 14, the Haitian government revealed information about a three-day high-level meeting that took place in the United States between officials from Haiti and Kenya.

Haitian officials stated that an agreement had been reached between the two nations regarding the deployment of officers to the distressed country, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

Furthermore, reports were indicating that the two nations established a specific timeframe for the deployment of police officers to Haiti.

Senior officials from the United States government called for the meeting, disregarding the Kenyan courts’ prohibition on the planned dispatch of 1,000 police officers to Haiti.

Although Haitian officials disclosed information about the meeting, they stopped just shy of revealing the deadline established for the deployment of the police.

Kenyan officials remained noticeably silent regarding the strategy President William Ruto’s government would employ to navigate around the court’s decision.

Haitian authorities commented that they would implement measures to ensure the legality of the deployment before proceeding with it.

“A final decision on the text should come early next week as well as its signature by both parties,” Haiti’s government stated as quoted by the Washington Post.

The meeting took place on the day when Musalia Mudavadi, the Prime Cabinet Secretary, defended the Kenyan police against allegations of human rights violations.

Musalia was replying to five members of the United States Congress who expressed their opposition to sending Kenyan police officers to Haiti.

Addressing the 44th Ordinary Session of the African Union in Addis Ababa, Musalia emphasized that the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) played a crucial role in ensuring that Kenyan police officers performed their duties with the highest standards of professionalism.

“This body investigates such impunity if any and holds individual police officers accountable, including through prosecution,” he told delegates at the conference.

Furthermore, the implementation is taking place amid calls from rebel leaders for a revolution aimed at removing Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry.
